BG&E Resources QLD (BGER QLD) was engaged to develop an alternative solution to supply water from Lake Keepit to Whitehaven Coal’s Gunnedah Basin Coal Operations, including to the Vickery Extension Project. An 80-kilometre-long pipeline was deemed the most effective solution, and the pipeline and distribution services four operations throughout the basin.
The scope of works included hydraulic analysis, intake and distribution facilities, equipment, and line sizing and specifications.
Located in the North West of New South Wales (NSW), the Gunnedah Basin is home to Whitehaven Coal’s four mines which produce high-quality metallurgical and thermal coal for export to various markets throughout Asia. The premium quality coal contributes to energy generation and steel production, and is in demand as it has the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of coal, consumed in seaborne trade.
Whitehaven Coal’s $700 million proposed Vickery Extension Project will leverage water from the above-mentioned pipeline and will deliver more than 900 jobs during construction and up to $1.2 billion into the State’s economy.
