Introducing Shivashant Selvakumar

Meet Shivashant Selvakumar, a structural engineer, who joined BG&E Resources as an undergraduate in July 2019 during his final year of study at Curtin University.

“Since starting my career at BG&E Resources four years ago, I have grown enormously. The company has given me the support and guidance to help me adjust to working life and achieve career milestones. I progressed from an Undergraduate to a Graduate Engineering position after completing my degree and then was promoted to a Structural Engineer after gaining post-graduate experience.”

Throughout Shivashant’s time at BG&E Resources, he has had the opportunity to work on numerous ports and marine-focused projects such as conducting a WSCAM baseline survey for Albany Port and developing detailed repair scopes as part of the Southern Ports Authority Asset Recovery program

Shivashant says “I have worked on transportation steelwork and lifting projects, asset integrity inspections, detailed designs, project management and business case development, and engineering secondments. Having the chance to work on a wide range of projects has helped me to develop my skills and figure out the type of engineering work I enjoy the most.

“Whenever I have asked to try something new, I have had the support of my line manager and other senior professionals in the company who have actively aided me in my journey. For any graduates looking to enter the workforce, use your voice and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.”

When speaking about his own development, Shivashant expresses, “Offering a solution to a challenge you face yields a much better response from your manager as it allows the other person to see that you have thought about the problem and considered potential solutions. It also means that you can start building your confidence as a young engineer.”
