Introducing Jack Pitsikas

Meet Jack Pitsikas, who has recently graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.

Jack first got exposure to BG&E Resources through paid work placement during his first year of Engineering studies back in 2019. When looking back at his experience Jack says, “The purpose of this placement was to help me decide the engineering discipline I wanted to pursue. Ultimately, I decided on Mechanical Engineering after being exposed to a variety of projects under the guidance of Michael Ullrich (Principal Mechanical Engineer) and Tony Daniel (Program Manager – Sustaining Capital).”

Jack joined us officially in mid-2022 as an Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer and worked a mixture of part-time and full-time hours, scheduled around his studies. Since graduating in mid-2023, Jack is working full-time and has now been promoted to Graduate Mechanical Engineer. When thinking about the advice he would give to other graduates looking to enter the engineering profession, Jack says “Don’t rush things, take the time to properly understand your chosen discipline and the tasks a job entails, as this will benefit you and the company far more in the long run.”

The STEM pathway appealed to Jack while he was in high school, due to his natural strengths in technical subjects. “I’ve always had a passion for understanding how things work and learning how to fix things, so engineering felt like a good fit.”

Jack is now putting what he has learned into practice and is looking forward to furthering his project management skills and chute design work over the coming months.

Looking to the future, Jack believes that having flexibility and exposure to a variety of projects will enable him to develop his career. He says “I am keen to go on-site soon to get some practical experience in the field and see the impact that mechanical engineering can have on our clients’ projects, particularly in solving their challenges.”

When asked what makes BG&E Resources unique, Jack says that having flexible working practices has made all the difference. “I enjoy working at BG&E Resources because of the people I work with and being able to work in both the Perth and Mandurah offices – as I live down near Mandurah. This was offered to me from the very beginning and has allowed me to enjoy greater work-life balance by reducing my commute.”
