Meet Robbie Rochow, a Project Manager in our Newcastle team.
From a young age, Maths was always one of his strongest subjects. He says, “Growing up in the Hunter Valley, most of my friends were either tradies or engineers. I had a good maths background and my parents always encouraged me to pursue further education, so engineering became the logical career path for me.”
Robbie brings a unique blend of experience to his role at BGER, cultivated through a 10-year career in professional rugby league (NRL) while simultaneously gaining a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of New South Wales. He went on to do a Project Management Certificate from Engineering Education Australia.
Reflecting on his career to date, his most memorable moment was simply graduating from university.
“It might not sound like much to a company of engineers but it was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. I was constantly juggling full-time training, travel, injuries, and study commitments. It took me 10 years across 3 different universities.”
Robbie adds, “After retiring from sport, I started work as a site engineer, where I had experience on multiple large infrastructure projects such as Sydney Metro, Snowy Hydro, and the Warringah Freeway Upgrade. Being able to transition straight into an engineering career has been one of my proudest achievements to date.”
At BGER, Robbie plays a key role in nurturing strong client relationships. “I love working in team environments and I get inspiration from the success of others. I like to try and break down the barriers between clients and contractors.”
When asked about the best thing about BGER, He explains, “Since starting a family, the flexibility here is huge for me. Spending the mornings with my son are moments I will never get back and time that I am extremely grateful for.”
Outside of work, Robbie enjoys spending time with his family and taking his son to the beach in Newcastle. An ardent music enthusiast, Robbie also loves listening to the Broken Record podcast with Rick Rubin, who has interviewed many of his favourite musicians such as Jack White, James Blake, and Matt Berninger.
When asked about his favourite holiday destination, “I would say Tuscany, in Italy. My wife and I travelled there for a few months after our wedding, and it was an incredible experience. We would love to go back again someday.”
